Course Description:
The course seeks to examine how gendered identities are formed and re-shaped as a result of the development process – and responsive approaches in a variety of historical and cultural contexts. It will equally explore how gender and development relate to other categories of social identity and difference, such as race, ethnicity, economic and social standing, urban or rural life, etc. The course will explore activities such as: gender-awareness and self-awareness for women and men; gender roles and needs; gender-sensitive appraisal (gender-friendly participatory appraisal (PRA)) and planning; gender research methodologies; gender and major global issues such as environment, culture and economic crisis; working with counterparts on gender issues; gender and development; and strategies for change. Further, attempts will be made on strategies to mainstreaming gender in the public sector and civil society organisations.
However, at the end of the course participants will be better equipped with the analytical and conceptual skills needed to understand gender issues in both contexts, enabling them to participate effectively in gender and development-related research, policy-making and implementation.
Specific Course Objective:
A. To expand the participants’ understanding of the concepts of “development” and “gender and Development”.
B. To sensitize participants to the importance of developing a clear gender-friendly vision and mission that will serve as guiding principles for their organisation.
C. To enhance participants’ skill levels for implementing gender-sensitive participatory techniques in project planning
D. To identify how facilitators can use selected strengths of participatory training, the experiential training cycle and adult training to increase the gender-responsiveness of training.
E. To equip participants to develop a comprehensive Training Plan for doing gender Training of Public Sector officers.
Benefits:
Participants will be equipped to with sufficient knowledge and expertise to participate in national discussion on MDG’s and to systematically implement project or conduct research/inquiry on gender issues. It will further create a better understanding of gender concepts and ability to integrate gender issues with development projects. Enhanced capacities (skills, attitudes and behaviours) of PRA practitioners/facilitators and development workers to integrate gender into participatory rural appraisals in communities.
The maximum number of course participants is 40. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation from the Institute.

Teaching Method/Classroom Format:
The course is delivered entirely online. The total time commitment is a minimum of 3 - 4 hours a week and a total of 35 contact hours to complete the entire course. The course is designed to be highly interactive and social, but we also work hard to ensure that the majority of content can be experienced in a self-paced manner. We do feature real-time interactions each week such as live discussions, live expert interviews, and live simulations. In order to accommodate busy schedules of learners from around the world we’ve set up a learning environment where participants have plenty of options and can choose the ones they’d like to be involved with depending on their availability and interest. Participants can also access all course content up to three months after course completion, so if you get pulled away at the last minute for part of the course you can still revisit the material afterwards.

Target Audience:
The course is aimed at gender focal points, women’s organisations, programs and project managers, researchers, policy-makers, activists, women leaders, students, staff of NGOs and CBOs, donor agencies, academics, researchers, volunteers, development actors, trainers, journalists, students, government officials etc.
Award of the Certificates:
Statistics from previous courses showed that submission of assignments and receiving online tutoring helped participants to integrate gender in their various activities. Certificates can be awarded only to those students who:
1) Completed all assignments and Final Exam
2) Obtain a combined final mark of 50% or more for the assignments and Final Exam.
Successful students will receive the GHRLTI Advance Certificate on Gender and Development Training.
Course Fee:
The course tuition fee is US$300. Course fees include access to all course materials, expert support, assignments as well as postage and packaging of a certificate. There is a limited number of partial scholarships available for applicants from developing countries, based on financial need
